tonight has been one of the most emotional nights of my life. my grandmother’s nearly inoperable brain tumor of the left temporal lobe was excised when i was just 14 years old. i don’t remember much about that time period because my family kept most of the details under wraps. tonight, my grandfather gave me his signed copy of “the healing blade.” this book is about dr. robert f. spetzler and 5 of his neuro cases/surgeries that were once deemed “impossible.” he is the man that the head of neurology in louisville (hodes) referred my grandmother to after he expressed his particular qualms with this procedure. he has also been recognized in the news lately for his immaculate judgement in regards to a comatose patient that is now living a life that is close to “normal.” all it took was waiting one more week to watch for any signs of recovery. at any rate, i am beyond thrilled to read this book. when and if i apply to medical school, this is what i’m going to write about. i haven’t felt this inspired by anyone or anything in a very long time. thank you, dr. spetzler, for saving my grandmother and for making me even more passionate about something that i didn’t think i could be any more passionate about.
